How to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles

We all develop forehead wrinkles and fine lines at some point as part of the natural aging process. You’ve probably heard before that as we age, collagen production slows down leading to a loss of elasticity and plumpness in the skin. Combine that with the fact that we constantly use facial movements, and more specifically the muscles behind our eyebrows to express ourselves, and you have a recipe for forehead wrinkles.

But if you want a smoother and more youthful look, you don’t necessarily have to turn to invasive treatments like Botox or fillers. Here, we share some top beauty tips to help prevent and reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles and 11 lines.

What Causes Forehead Wrinkles?

Overall, forehead wrinkles are caused by repetitive use of your frontalis muscles that run from the top of your forehead down to the area between your eyebrows. As a result, people who tend to be more expressive may be more likely to develop forehead wrinkles at an earlier age. But in some cases, it comes down to anatomy. Developing forehead wrinkles earlier in life can be the result of having a bulkier and more pronounced frontalis, creating defined forehead lines. While genetics are often at play in this case, lifestyle can also contribute forehead wrinkles, including:

  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Lack of hydration
  • Poor diet
  • Smoking and alcohol use

And of course, we can’t dismiss the natural aging process. As we age, our skin experiences a loss of elasticity, thinning the forehead skin which already tends to lack plumpness.

How to Reduce Forehead Lines & Wrinkles

Whether it’s horizontal lines that give away your age or the unpopular 11 lines that can make your face look perpetually angry, forehead wrinkles are front and center and can be hard to hide.

Regardless of what causes wrinkles, there are simple tricks you can use to help reduce their appearance, like adding wrinkle-fighting skincare to your beauty-routine. Ingredients like hydrolyzed collagen peptides add moisture, rejuvenate skin and boost hydration to smooth wrinkles.

How to Reduce Wrinkles on the Forehead Naturally

Assuming you don’t want to turn to needles or spend hundreds of dollars on chemical products, there are some natural treatments you can try to help keep wrinkles at bay and to reduce their overall appearance for a smoother look.

Put Your Lines and Wrinkles on Ice

Applying cold to sore muscles reduces inflammation, allowing more blood to flow to the area. Since forehead wrinkles are related to your frontalis muscle, you can use ice to help increase blood flow to this muscle. Either apply a plastic bag filled with 6-12 ice cubes to your forehead for up to 10 minutes a day or rub an ice cube directly on wrinkles and lines for 5 minutes for a more intense treatment.

Note: You should never apply ice directly to the skin for longer than 10 minutes as you can literally freeze the water in your skin cells, constricting blood flow and potentially causing harm. Ice burn can damage your skin resulting in a white, red, or yellowish-gray tinge.

Whip Up A Banana & Yogurt Face Mask

The combination of bananas and yogurt applies a one-two punch of wrinkle-fighting power. Bananas have some of the same vitamins and nutrients found in top-quality moisturizers while yogurt’s lactic acid works to dissolve dead skin cells and tighten pores. Add a touch of honey to your  mask for even more moisturizing power with antioxidants and antimicrobials.

  • Mash a ripe banana in a large mixing bowl
  • Mix in 4 teaspoons of plain, organic yogurt
  • Add 2 teaspoons of honey
  • Stir until all ingredients are combined

Apply a ⅛-inch layer of the mask to your forehead and let it sit for 15 minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water and patting your skin dry with a soft towel. We recommend doing the mask at night so you can then apply a moisturizing serum or night cream to boost hydration absorption while you sleep.

Use Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a natural exfoliator and toner that tightens the skin on your forehead without drying ingredients like alcohol. Not only does it provide smoother forehead skin, but it also restores your skin’s natural pH balance and removes dry, dead skin cells revealing newer, younger-looking skin underneath. Apply pure witch hazel to your forehead in a circular motion after washing your face and finish with a moisturizing serum for best results.

Apply Olive Oil At Night

Olive oil contains four powerful antioxidants:

  1. Vitamin E
  2. Polyphenols
  3. Phytosterols
  4. Hydroxytyrosol

Together, these antioxidants protect against sun damage, prevent free-radical damage, moisturize, and restore skin smoothness. A thin layer applied before bedtime may help you maintain a wrinkle-free forehead.

Massage Your Forehead with Coconut Oil

Massaging your forehead with coconut oil relaxes your muscles, returning them to their proper resting position for a smoother look. Because coconut oil is a natural moisturizer, antifungal and antibacterial, you can leave it on your skin to continue reaping its nurturing benefits.

How to Prevent Forehead Wrinkles

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You can use these wrinkle-preventing tips to maintain a smoother and more youthful looking face:

  • Slather on the sunscreen: Limiting sun exposure and using sunscreen daily is hugely important not just to prevent wrinkles, but also to avoid sun damage to your skin that can increase your risk of skin cancers.
  • Drink more water: Staying hydrated is essential for a healthy glow and smoother skin. Water flushes toxins from your body which can help keep skin healthier and maintain hydration to improve skin physiology.
  • Maintain a healthy diet: Anti-aging ingredients found in foods containing protein peptides and essential fatty acids help improve the metabolism of skin components. Antioxidants also relieve skin oxidative damage by removing cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) that contribute to aging and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity. Green tea, olive oil, salmon, avocados, pomegranates, and lots of veggies like carrots, pumpkin, leafy greens, bell peppers, and broccoli can all help maintain a youthful glow.
  • Make healthy lifestyle choices: Reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and exercising can all help slow down the skin aging process.
